The Premier Inc. healthcare alliance and the Wye River Group on Healthcare (WRGH) have launched a Web site that will host a repository of best practices based on successful community-based health initiatives from across the nation.

Leading Healthy Communities (LHC - www.leadinghealthycommunities.com) will feature case studies drawn from both the WRGH and Premier. These examples of proven community collaboratives will enable community leaders to benchmark against one another to achieve successes within their communities.

“Many communities have successfully executed initiatives that address issues of access, quality, cost, disparities and a host of other issues,” said Richard A. Norling, president and CEO at Premier. “Leading Healthy Communities will allow community and not-for-profit program leaders around the country, as well as novice representatives of a community, to find information and solutions on how to improve their own areas.”

WRGH studies come from a published report titled, “Communities Shaping a Vision for America’s 21st Century Health and Healthcare” (see www.wrgh.org). Premier studies were created from award winning programs recognized by Premier’s Monroe E. Trout Premier Cares Award, providing $2.75 million in funding to 90 community organizations nationwide since 1992. The award recognizes six not-for-profit organizations each year that have found creative ways to improve the health of medically underserved communities.

"Leading Healthy Communities is a unique resource that brings together, in one place, some of the nation's best practices in healthcare,” said Jon Comola, CEO of the Wye River Group on Healthcare and the Foundation for American Health Care Leadership. “As the breadth and depth of information continues to grow, the site will truly offer communities a one-stop source of reliable information on how to improve the health of their communities."

LHC features a community action guide, offering easy access to templates, surveys and assessment tools, as well as links to funding and professional expertise, to help make collaborative efforts successful.

The Web site also features a Kids Action section, where kids can easily find out how to become leaders and make a difference in the health of their communities. Kids Action provides a step-by-step guide for children and young adults to get involved in positively impacting the health of people in their community. In addition to explaining how to get started, organize others to join, and devise a plan, the guide provides online resources and connections to outside experts.

WRGH and Premier are currently seeking strategic partners to help spread awareness of the site and success of these local initiatives, as well as feedback from those who visit the site.

“In our continuous efforts to assist communities in achieving positive results, we are always looking for organizations to add their stories to LHC, and we value any feedback or suggestions that visitors might have regarding the Web site and its usefulness,” Comola said.

Cincinnati Sub-Zero (CSZ), a developer of advanced patient temperature management systems, including highly effective and efficient cooling products, recently reviewed the results of successive years of cooling therapy studies around the world.

Studies of the impact of therapeutic cooling show reduced long-term brain damage and improved neurological function in sudden cardiac arrest patients. In the last few days, a professional football player and his doctors may have demonstrated similar neurological treatment benefits in association with spinal cord injury.

Cincinnati Sub-Zero (CSZ), a developer of advanced patient temperature management systems, including highly effective and efficient cooling products, recently reviewed the results of successive years of cooling therapy studies around the world. "Improved outcomes in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients is clear in study after study of therapeutic hypothermia solutions -- and these are human trials that have taken place in the US, Canada, Norway, Sweden, and other countries," said Mark Beran, Vice President and General Manager of CSZ Medical.

"ILCOR (The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation) produced the first international guidelines to include therapeutic cooling in 2000. The New England Journal of Medicine first noted hypothermia treatment benefits to cardiac patients in 2002. The American Heart Association published a therapy-supportive advisory statement in 2003, following an international standard-setting review. And, the international community issued additional recommendations in 2005. More and more emergency services providers are adopting the treatment, and it is increasingly clear that the solution timing -- the sooner, the better -- is vital," said Beran.

Where therapeutic cooling has been shown to halt brain cell death, it now may very well be illustrating it also can hinder spinal nerve death. In the case of the football player's neurological damage, doctors and experts speculate the hypothermia may have contributed to slowing his body's ability to produce swelling and irritation, reducing the possibility of spinal nerve death.

While controversy still exists regarding the exact means of neurological improvement, studies do show that patients receiving controlled cooling therapy are more likely to survive their hospital stay, and be discharged with more neurological function.

The 1st Annual International Therapeutic Temperature Management (TTM Congress) will be held in Cancun, Mexico from December 4-7, 2007. The TTM Congress will convene experts from around the world to review practices and research in therapeutic hypothermia and patient temperature modulation. CSZ Medical is an unrestricted educational grant sponsor for the event. More information is available at http://www.ttmcongress.com.

Pfizer Inc said today that the company plans to present key data on in-line medicines and pipeline research at the Annual Meeting of Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in Chicago, Illinois. In addition, Pfizer plans to host an investor meeting on September 18th to review key updates on infectious disease medicines and pipeline research. The meeting will be webcast live from Chicago.

Pfizer will present more than 50 abstracts on a range of new findings across bacterial, fungal and viral disease research at the ICAAC meeting.

“Pfizer has a rich history in developing and commercializing new medicines to address infectious diseases including the recent FDA approval of HIV medication, Selzentry,” said Dr. Mike Dunne, vice president, Infectious Disease Global Research and Development. “As we move into the future, our scientists will focus even more on prevention and leverage the work of other therapeutic areas, not just to treat the infections themselves, but the consequences of those infections as well.”

Infectious disease represents a significant and constant threat. Today, infectious disease accounts for 21 percent of all disease-related morbidity and mortality, resulting in 12 million deaths annually. Infectious diseases are not only spreading faster, but they appear to be emerging more quickly than ever before. Since the 1970s, newly emerging diseases have been identified at the unprecedented rate of one or more per year. There are now nearly 40 diseases, such as HIV and HCV, that were unknown a generation ago.

Addiction Community Resource Site Now Provides Telephone Supplement for Those in Need, 24 Hours a Day, Seven Days a Week

Addicted.com, a website for addicts and their families to find support and recovery resources online, has announced a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week, toll-free number as an additional resource to addicts and their families.

The toll-free “LifeLine” number, 877-ADDICTED, enables people struggling with addiction or their families to reach a live, specially trained Addicted.com supervisor who can give advice and refer callers to centers near them that specialize in treating their specific addictions. The number has been added to the Addicted.com site as a way to expand upon the site’s accessibility to all of those in need.

“It is extremely gratifying to be able to add a toll-free, all-access number to our Addicted.com site,” said Addicted.com Founder and CEO John S. Shegerian. “We’ve worked hard to make Addicted.com a comprehensive place that people can visit from their computers, but we are also aware that there are those who may not have access to a computer who also need help. With that in mind we established our first-of-its-kind, free, 24-hour LifeLine. With more than 40 million addicts in the United States alone, there is an enormous population of individuals out there struggling with addiction who just need something like Addicted.com or our new LifeLine to kick-start their road to recovery.”

The Addicted.com site itself features a full slate of professional addiction experts that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of common addictions including eating disorders, sexual addiction, gambling and drug and alcohol addiction. The site also offers people seeking help a proprietary Zip Code Locator which visitors can use to find nearby recovery centers, doctors, counselors and other assistance for their addictions.

Other features include AddictedTube, which allows visitors to view and share addiction-related videos. AddictedSpace is another valuable feature where members can share progress on recovery, ask for help, and share stories of addiction and rehabilitation.

The site is also the first of its kind to feature virtual tours of treatment facilities so that people struggling with addictions and their families and loved ones can get a sense of the treatment options available in advance.

Along with AddictedSpace and AddictedTube, visitors can take self-tests to help determine whether they have an addiction and may need to seek help. Articles, advice, experts and other resources give users the option of complete anonymity if they are seeking resources but aren’t ready to share their story with the world.

Addicted.com also features an online “Aftercare” program, designed to continue giving support to addicts after their treatment has ended.

Addicted.com provides addiction recovery resources and tools for addicts, family members and friends throughout the Internet community. The main goal of the site is to maintain a well-known online space for people to visit when they need advice, answers, assistance or just someone to talk with.

For more information on addicted.com, its mission and services, please visit www.addicted.com or contact info@addicted.com, 1-866-ADDICTED. To reach the new 24-hour LifeLine, please call 1-877-ADDICTED.

National Survey Reveals Majority of Small Businesses Are Unprepared

A national survey of small businesses conducted by the American Red Cross and FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) found that while 94 percent of small business owners believe there is a potential for a disaster to seriously disrupt their business within the next two years, only 43 percent feel prepared for a one week disruption of their business, and 22 percent feel prepared for a one month disruption. Importantly, many businesses do want to become better prepared, with almost a quarter of respondents indicating they are planning on taking steps to prepare their businesses for disaster.

Based on these findings, the American Red Cross and FedEx Corp. will create tools to help small businesses get prepared.

FedEx and the Red Cross have been working together to examine small business disaster preparedness because of the important role small businesses play in the national and global economy, as well as the safety and strength of the communities in which they are located.

“Having responded to more than 75,000 disasters nationwide last year, we’ve seen first hand how businesses with trained employees, protected resources and plans for operational continuity can decrease the physical and financial impact of a disaster, and lessen the burden on first responders,” said Darlene Sparks Washington, Director of Preparedness for the American Red Cross. “All businesses should have a disaster plan, but for small businesses, being prepared can make a difference in being able to stay in business after a disaster.”

The survey data is especially relevant considering that one in four businesses do not reopen after a major disaster such as a flood, tornado or earthquake, according to the Institute for Business and Home Safety, and considering that small businesses account for more than 99 percent of businesses in the United States alone.

“Disaster preparedness and contingency planning are core competencies at FedEx,” said David Bronczek, president and CEO of FedEx Express. “In addition to helping small businesses grow by providing unrivaled access to the global marketplace, we are delighted to leverage our planning expertise in collaboration with the American Red Cross to benefit small businesses in their disaster preparedness efforts.”

While small businesses have taken some steps to prepare their business and their employees in advance of a disaster, they lag behind on several important indicators. A majority of businesses surveyed have developed employee phone lists for notifications and communication during a disaster (86 percent); ensured the safety of important business files or records (75 percent); and purchased insurance for business disruption or damage (80 percent). But businesses are much less likely to have completed other important steps. Only 41 percent have taken preparedness steps based on the type of disasters common to the business location and only 55 percent have communicated with employees about their roles before and during a disaster.

Stacey Wieder is a practice manager at Lake Seminole Animal Hospital in Florida. She manages the hospital’s disaster planning for its 13 employees. The Lake Seminole Animal Hospital had to evacuate and utilized shutdown procedures during Hurricanes Charley and Jeanne in 2004. “By planning ahead for emergencies, the hospital is demonstrating to employees that their personal safety is important. Our employees have become better preparedness advocates and clients even tell us that our proactive planning has encouraged them to take preparedness steps,” said Wieder.

The Red Cross and FedEx are developing preparedness solutions to help small business owners develop an emergency plan and help their employees get prepared. A downloadable disaster preparedness checklist for small businesses will be made available at www.fedex.com/smallbiz, as well as discount coupons which FedEx small business customers can use to receive 10 percent off their final purchase of preparedness supplies at the Red Cross online store, www.redcross.org/store, from September 10, 2007- October 31, 2007.

Additional information on how small businesses, individuals and families can prepare for disasters is available at www.redcross.org or by contacting your local Red Cross chapter.

Survey Methodology

Macro International, Inc. conducted telephone surveys with 241 small businesses in June, 2007 to learn about how prepared they are for disasters, what specific steps they have taken, plan to take or have decided not to take to become prepared, and to gather information about tools and various resources that would assist them in preparing their business for a disaster. A random national sample of 101 small businesses has a margin of error of +/- 9.8% at a confidence level of 95%.

Minority owned businesses and businesses located in disaster prone areas were over sampled to understand specific needs and characteristics among these two groups to inform development of emergency preparedness materials and tools that encourage businesses to take action steps. For purposes of this study, the definition of a small business is fewer than 100 employees but also a minimum of seven-10 employees.

About The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.

FedEx and the American Red Cross

FedEx has worked with the American Red Cross for 10 years. A founding member of the Annual Disaster Giving Program, FedEx contributes more than $1 million in cash and in-kind services to the Red Cross every year. Recently, FedEx was presented with the Circle of Humanitarians award in gratitude for its generous contributions and longstanding commitment to the humanitarian mission of the organization. FedEx supports the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program as well as the International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies. FedEx also has supported Red Cross efforts as needs have arisen for specific disaster initiatives such as Hurricane Katrina and many others. In addition, FedEx also lends logistics expertise to the Red Cross and thousands of FedEx employees directly volunteer.

      – Largest consumer-driven health plan in FEHB announces its latest innovation to simplify and improve health interactions for federal enrollees –
– Aetna’s Personal Health Record, powered by the ActiveHealth® patented CareEngine® system, provides personalized alerts to members and physicians about opportunities to improve care –

Aetna (NYSE:AET) announced today that as of January 2008, every federal enrollee that selects an Aetna medical plan will gain access to a password-protected, online Personal Health Record (PHR) that provides a centralized resource for health information and delivers personalized alerts to improve health care. As of September 1st, 26,000 Aetna federal enrollees already have access to an Aetna PHR.

“We are committed to helping simplify and improve our members’ interactions with the health care system,” said Tom Bernatavitz, Aetna vice president of Federal Plans. “The Aetna PHR is the latest example of how we’re identifying opportunities for our federal members to increase access to information to help improve their health, as well as improving convenience,” he said.

“It is a great help for busy families trying to keep track of immunizations on their children, as well as for federal enrollees that travel. They can access their personal health information 24 hours a day, seven days a week from anywhere in the world,” Bernatavitz explained.

Aetna PHR works in the background to improve health

Last year Aetna was the first to show its federal members physician-specific price information, clinical quality and efficiency data in selected markets. “Now we are arming our federal members with a powerful Personal Health Record that contains not only important data about their health, but actually works to help improve health,” said Bernatavitz.

Aetna’s PHR is powered by the ActiveHealth patented CareEngine system. In addition to providing a centralized record of member health history, current treatments and personal health data, Aetna’s PHR continuously scans the individual’s health data and claims information – such as physician office, lab, diagnostic treatment and prescriptions – then compares it against highly respected sources of medical literature. When appropriate, it will alert the individual and, in some cases, his or her doctors about possible urgent situations and opportunities to improve care. Members can further personalize the PHR with family health history, immunization records, allergies and emergency contacts.

Innovations help drive growth in Aetna plans

This year Aetna became the largest consumer-driven health plan in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program with 26,000 members in its two Aetna HealthFund® plans – the Aetna HealthFund Consumer Driven Health Plan (Health Reimbursement Arrangement or HRA plan) and the Aetna HealthFund High Deductible Health Plan (Health Savings Account or HSA plan). Aetna introduced its HRA to federal enrollees in 2004 and the HSA in 2005. Both plans give federal members access to Aetna’s PPO networks and are currently available to enrollees in 37 states plus the District of Columbia. In 2008, these plans will be expanded to include Vermont.

Aetna is the fastest growing health plan in percentage growth across all federal plans for the past four years. In addition, in 2007 Aetna began offering its standalone dental PPO plan nationwide through the Federal Employee Dental and Vision Insurance Program.

“We’ve seen tremendous interest from federal enrollees in our plan designs, benefits and the availability of important information to help make informed health care decisions,” said Bernatavitz.

“The PHR is another example of how Aetna is offering federal workers more value for their health care dollar.”

Aetna is one of the nation’s leading diversified health care benefits companies, serving approximately 34.9 million people with information and resources to help them make better informed decisions about their health care. Aetna offers a broad range of traditional and consumer-directed health insurance products and related services, including medical, pharmacy, dental, behavioral health, group life, long-term care and disability plans, and medical management capabilities. King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre to double screening capacity, expand screening program from one to four disorders

PerkinElmer, Inc. (NYSE: PKI), a global technology leader in Health Sciences and Photonics, today announced a multi-year agreement with the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to support its expanded newborn screening program. Under the terms of the agreement, PerkinElmer will provide instrumentation, reagents, software and screening expertise that will help the King Faisal Hospital double its screening capacity by the end of 2008. The contract, to be executed through PerkinElmer’s regional distributor, HVD Vertriebs Gmbh, will also expand the hospital’s program from screening for one disorder to a total of four disorders.

“We are pleased to partner with King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre to aid in the expansion of its newborn screening program,” said Robert F. Friel, President and Chief Operating Officer, PerkinElmer, Inc. “PerkinElmer is committed to supporting early detection programs worldwide with leading neonatal screening technology designed to identify infants at risk for devastating metabolic disorders, enabling early intervention and treatment to save lives and improve quality of life.”

Approximately 800,000 babies are born each year in Saudi Arabia, which has a population of about 27.6 million. The King Faisal Hospital is Saudi Arabia’s leading provider of neonatal screening for genetic disorders, which allows for the early identification and treatment of otherwise debilitating or life threatening conditions and has become one of the most widely accepted procedures in preventative pediatrics. Through this expanded initiative with PerkinElmer, the King Faisal Hospital hopes to double its screening rate to 200,000 newborns by the end of 2008, and to 400,000 newborns by the end of 2009.

As part of this agreement, the King Faisal Hospital will use Specimen Gate®, PerkinElmer’s screening laboratory information management system (LIMS). This software will allow the hospital to implement a comprehensive solution that will electronically track laboratory workflow from sample receipt and preparation, through the analytical steps, to quality control review, reporting and follow-up.

PerkinElmer currently provides the King Faisal Hospital with reagents for screening congenital hypothyroidism (CH), which if left untreated can lead to severe mental retardation. Under the expanded program, which will begin in late 2007, three additional tests will be sourced from PerkinElmer including: congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a hormonal disorder affecting the adrenal glands; Galactosemia, which if left untreated, can cause poor development or death; and biotinidase deficiency (BIOT), which can lead to seizures, developmental delay, eczema and hearing loss.

About the Essure® Procedure

The Essure procedure, approved by the FDA in 2002, is a sterilization procedure that replaces tubal ligation for women. A soft micro-insert is placed into the Fallopian tubes through the cervix using a hysteroscope. Once in place, the device is designed to elicit tissue growth in and around the micro-insert to form an occlusion or blockage in the Fallopian tubes, over three months. An Essure procedure does not require cutting into the body and can be performed in the doctor’s office, a less costly procedure setting, with just a local anesthetic. A woman is able to leave the office about 45 minutes after the procedure is completed. The Essure confirmation test is performed three months after the procedure to confirm that the micro-inserts are in the correct location, the tubes are blocked and that the woman can discontinue temporary birth control. The Essure procedure is 99.80% effective (based on four years of clinical study follow-up data). The probability of pregnancy in 1000 women at 4 years is only 2.0 as compared to 11.8 for surgical tubal ligation procedures studied in CREST.

About Conceptus

Conceptus, Inc. manufactures and markets the Essure Permanent Birth Control system, an innovative medical device and procedure designed to provide a non-incisional alternative to tubal ligation, which is currently the leading form of birth control worldwide. The availability of the Essure procedure in the U.S. is expected to open up a market currently occupied by incisional tubal ligation and vasectomy, which combined account for more than 1 million procedures annually.

Additional information about the Essure procedure is available at www.essure.com or by calling the Essure Information Center at 1-877-ESSURE1. With the continued expansion of the Hispanic population in the United States, a majority of which trace their roots to Mexico, Bedoyecta promises to be an appealing and profitable product for U.S. retailers who cater to Hispanic consumers.

Valeant has assigned Houston-based Midway Importing Inc. as the distributor for Bedoyecta. Midway Importing currently services most Hispanic independent and chain grocers, pharmacy retail chains, and mass merchandisers that service the Hispanic market.
